State Profile
Alabama
boasts a short but productive coastline, abundant rivers and streams,
and rich woodlands. Our finest public lands (Choctaw, Bon Secour, and
Eufaula National Wildlife Refuges, and the Bankhead National Forest,
for example) evoke this state's long history, even as they shelter many
of the creatures that once were found here in greater abundance.
Migrating
birds enrich our lives during their annual trek to and from Central
America and their northern nesting sites. The threatened loggerhead and
endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles
nest on our beaches, which are also home to other creatures... such as
the endangered Alabama beach mouse and a host of elegant wading birds.
The
Deepwater Horizon oil spill
of 2010 soiled Bon Secour. Efforts are continuing to clean up this
Alabama treasure.
Working
together, we can conserve our
natural resources for the pleasure and benefit of future generations.
