State Profile
California
contains many of our nation's greatest natural treasures: from the
Pacific coastal waters on the west to the Sierra Nevada range and Mono
Lake on the east; to the redwood forests of the north, to the Salton
Sea and southern California's beaches in the south. Our state is
blessed with natural wonders, including a spectacular coastline, Lake
Tahoe, Yosemite, the Kings River canyon, stately forest groves of
sequoia, sugar pine, and oak, and magnificent desert wilderness areas
in Death Valley, Joshua Tree, and the Mojave National Preserve.
California also is blessed with the rich soil of the great Central
Valley and a mild Mediterranean climate.
Because
of this
rich natural history and mild climate, more than 36 million people now
call California home, and the population continues to grow by more than
500,000 people every year. Population growth is putting unsustainable
pressure on virtually all of California's natural ecosystems, and has
created a demand for water that has degraded many of the state's rivers
and the agricultural productivity of the Owens River Valley.
As
members of
Republicans for Environmental Protection, we think that the Republican
Party should reflect a conservation ethic that will provide for a
healthy environment and responsible stewardship of our land and natural
resources. California Republican leaders such as former Congressman Tom
Campbell once held to that ethic. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger does
today. (Read our Winter
'04 Green Elephant article about Governor
Schwarzenegger.) We believe more California Republicans
should follow their lead.
