State Profile
Connecticut
is a state of history and heritage, where rivers, forests, fall colors,
and Long Island Sound make for a high quality of life.
Connecticut
has a great system of state parks and forests where residents and
visitors can enjoy camping, fishing, hunting, and boating. Along Long
Island Sound, birders visit the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife
Refuge, named after the nine-term Connecticut Republican congressman
who was instrumental in establishing the refuge in 1972. The McKinney
refuge provides habitat for numerous species of waterfowl and
shorebirds, including the endangered roseate tern, brant, and scoters.
More than 280 species of neotropical songbirds use the refuge's Salt
Meadow unit.
Connecticut's
more recent Republican lawmakers have followed Congressman McKinney's
powerful conservation example. Former Congressmen Christopher Shays,
who served from 1987 to 2009, Nancy Johnson, who served 12 terms,
and Rob Simmons, who served three terms in the House, were conservation
champions. Simmons was the
first REP member ever elected to Congress.
Working
together, we can conserve Connecticut's beauty and high quality of
life, for the pleasure and benefit of future generations.STATE
