Private party in Winnetka introduces many potential members to REP.
One of the nicest REP events in years took place in September at the Winnetka home of Charles and Geraldine (“Bean”) Carroll. The Carrolls joined their friends, Hope and King Poor and Suzanne and John Canfield, in hosting a party to introduce their friends and neighbors to REP. Among those who attended were Congressman Mark Kirk (a member of REP’s Honorary Board) and State Rep. Beth Coulson, both of whom spoke glowingly of REP. President Martha Marks and Membership and Development Director Rob Sisson also attended, as did Al Pyott and REP director Dr. Barbara Struthers. New members who signed up that evening included Susan and Michael McGill and Joan DePree. Several others who were there joined in the following weeks.
While she was in Illinois that weekend, Martha met with five of the chapter’s ExCom members: Dr. Bill Holleman, Stan Perrin, Dr. Richard Benkin, Henry Eilers, and Steve Langley. And Martha and Rob enjoyed lunch with a long-long-time Chicago REP member, Judy Peyton.

Chapter-Sponsored Mercury Forum a Success
The Illinois Chapter was a sponsor of a bipartisan Mercury Forum in Highland Park. The forum organized by state Representative Karen May of Highland Park and a committee that included REP board member Barbara Struthers, Ph.D., a board-certified toxicologist.
Speakers touched on many aspects of mercury toxicity, including autism, mental retardation and other neurotoxicities thought to be or known to be related to mercury.
A speaker from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency reviewed sources of emissions, including the fact that most of the environmental mercury in the Midwest is from coal-fired power plants. The difference in the Bush administration's “Clear Skies” act and its much slower reduction of environmental mercury over Great Lakes states compared to Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standards was one of the topics discussed.
Approximately 400 people attended. The Illinois REP literature table was attended by Dave Herrington, Dorothy Camp, and Barbara Struthers. The REP mercury policy position was available, and that and the C.E.P Quarterly appeared to be the most popular pieces of literature on the REP table.
Other sponsors of this event included the Illinois chapters of the Sierra Club, Izaak Walton League, and Trout Unlimited; Auto and Truck Recyclers of Illinois, Prairie Rivers Network, Nucor Steel, Fluorecycle Inc., Illinois Association of Park Districts, Illinois Park & Recreation Association, and several groups whose main interest was autism and thimerosol-containing vaccines.
