State Profile

Indiana, in our nation's heartland, conjures up images of sublime natural beauty. Pastoral scenes of rolling farmland, Amish buggies, hardwood forests, and the shores of Lake Michigan are ours to enjoy.

Treasured outdoor places in Indiana include the Hoosier National Forest, where prohibition of off-road vehicle usage protects the forest's soils, water, and wildlife habitat. Other great Indiana places include the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, where dunes rise to heights of nearly 200 feet. More than 1,100 plant species are found at Indiana Dunes, including pricklypear cacti not normally associated with the Midwest.

Working together, we can conserve Indiana's great natural heritage for the pleasure and benefit of future generations.
