State Profile
Stretching
from the Atlantic shore to the Appalachians, Maryland is a
small state with great natural diversity, including rivers, forests,
Assateague Island National Seashore, and Chesapeake Bay, America's
largest estuary. Other great Maryland places include Blackwater
National Wildlife Refuge, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National
Historical Park, and the Green Ridge and Savage River state forests.
Conservation has enjoyed bipartisan support through
the efforts of informed Republican lawmakers such as former U.S.
Senator Charles M. Mathias, former Congressmen Wayne Gilchrest and
Connie Morella, and current Congressman Roscoe Bartlett. All have been
strong leaders on both state and national issues, including Bay
restoration and developing cleaner energy made in America.
One
of the leading issues in Maryland is urban sprawl in the Baltimore and
Washington metropolitan areas. Stormwater runoff from development is
one of the leading causes of Chesapeake Bay's water quality decline.
Working
together, we can conserve Maryland's diverse natural heritage for the
pleasure and benefit of future generations.
