State Profile
From
the towering peaks of the north to the desert canyons of the south,
from the lava flows of the Malpais to the wide-open eastern plains, few
states can match the glory of New Mexico.
Yet,
we now find ourselves facing the same environmental challenges we once
thought were restricted to other states: urban sprawl, air pollution,
traffic congestion, rapid loss of wildlife habitat and severe water
worries, including degradation of the Rio Grande.
We
have Theodore Roosevelt to thank for many gems in New Mexico, such as
the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument and what is now Chaco
Culture National Historical Park. Herbert Hoover designated the White
Sands National Monument. under the Antiquities Act. Gerald Ford signed
legislation designating wilderness areas within Bandelier National
Monument and Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
Not
too long ago, New Mexico Republicans were eager to be allied with
friends of conservation. Former Governor David Cargo was one of those,
and we're proud to report that he's still active as both a member of
REP's Honorary Board and our New Mexico Chapter Executive Commitee.
State Representative Kathy McCoy (our chapter vice president for four
years) is a REP member.
The
New Mexico Chapter of Republicans for Environmental Protection is
dedicated to educating our party leaders and elected officials on the
need for strong environmental policies, and to building a grassroots
groundswell that will carry the GOP back to its great conservation
tradition. We believe that conservation goes hand in hand with the
founding principles of conservatism. We invite like-minded Republicans
to join our efforts.
