"Here’s what
President Theodore Roosevelt

said at the first governor’s
council ever convened at the
White House, back in 1908:
'It is safe to say that
the prosperity of our people
depends directly on the energy
and intelligence with which
our natural resources are used.

It is equally clear that
these resources are the final basis
of national power and perpetuity.
It is ominously evident
that these resources are in the

course of rapid exhaustion.'"

—from a speech that REP lifetime member
Theodore Roosevelt IV
(a resident of New York)
gave at a REP conference.

State Profile

New York has a long history of conservation leadership. The Adirondacks, which is still America's largest protected area east of the Mississippi River, was established by Republican leaders. Protection of the Adirondacks as "forever wild" was enshrined in the state Constitution in 1894.

Since then, great New Yorkers such as Theodore Roosevelt worked over the decades to establish a first-rate system of state parks and forests. Most recently, under Governor George Pataki's leadership, 1995-2007, New York continued its tradition of leadership in protecting air, water, open space, and wildlife habitat.

New York REP consists of grassroots activists, elected officials, and outstanding individuals who are also conservation leaders. We're proud to count New Yorker Theodore Roosevelt IV, the great-grandson of President Roosevelt, as a Lifetime Member.

Are you a kindred spirit? If so, we invite you to join Republicans for Environmental Protection and lend your voice of support to New York's pro-conservation GOP leaders, who have a great record of standing tall and proud for natural resource conservation... and of winning REP's national awards.
