Generating Awareness

by Florida Chapter President Melissa Iglesias
published in the Orlando Sentinel, April 19, 2008

The answer to the question posed is yes, Earth Day does make a real difference. The reasons are numerous, but there is one reason that trumps all others: awareness. A major stumbling block to affecting change for the better is generating awareness. Once people become acquainted with the issue in question, the logical next step is developing a solution.

The key "battle ground" to getting anything accomplished is being able to make an indelible impression in the minds of those you want to reach. As a result, any local, regional, or worldwide event that brings the issue to the forefront of people's consciences is vital. I think society is on the right path in regard to mitigating the negative effects of global warming. However, there are still many other Earth Day-related dilemmas that need attention, such as loss of species and habitat, water and soil pollution, unstable timber and agricultural practices, etc.

Earth Day, as well as any other green event, is much needed in the war against the degradation of our home. However, we still have much work to do before we can honestly call ourselves stewards of the planet.
