The Conservation GOP

Re: "Mr. Bush's Miscalculation" (editorial, July 1):

Those of us who want George W. Bush's presidency to succeed are disappointed by his environmental miscues. The delay in getting snowmobiles out of Yellowstone National Park—which was established by a Republican president and Congress—is only the latest in a lengthy list.

No wonder polls show President Bush's environmental stock is plummeting. No wonder GOP congressmen are breaking ranks on environmental issues.

We suggest that President Bush get reacquainted with the Republican tradition of conservation. He would learn a great deal from the legacy that Theodore Roosevelt and other GOP leaders before and after him have created.
