Nixon, the leftist?

by Brooke Jennings, a REP member in Salt Lake City, Utah
published in the Salt Lake Tribune on October 30, 2006

Dan Dagget (Opinion, Oct. 27) stated, "In 1973; environmentalism was synonymous with leftist politics."

Really? Sen. Barry Goldwater was one of the leading environmental advocates of the 1970s. Much of the environmental legislation that President Bush has eviscerated was promoted and signed by President Nixon. Leftist?

During the '70s, environmentalism was, in fact, thoroughly bipartisan.

Dagget described an "exclosure" protected from grazing which turned into a desert, while surrounding land that was grazed became lushly vegetated. This is contrary to what I have seen in grazing protected plots, as well as contrary to common sense. Dagget is not credible. And his "environmentalism" is suspect at best.
