REP Calls on Ehlers to Support Clean Energy Bill

June 25, 2009

Republicans for Environmental Protection today called on Congressman Vern Ehlers (R-MI) to vote for a clean energy bill – the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES) – that is expected to be considered by the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday.

"Our economy and the pristine natural resources that make Michigan such a special place to live and work are intrinsically linked," said Rob Sisson, president of Republicans for Environmental Protection. "This bill is good for Michigan’s economy because it will create new business opportunities, encourage our industries to be more sustainable, and set the stage for America to compete and prosper in the 21st century economy. Protecting our land, air and water isn’t a partisan issue or a political issue – it’s just plain common sense. We urge Congressman Ehlers to vote yes when this plan comes before the U.S. House tomorrow."

ACES, also known as the Waxman-Markey Bill, is a landmark clean energy bill that is scheduled to be voted on in the House on Friday. The bill is designed to increase investment in clean energy production, which will help create jobs for Michigan workers and new opportunities for Michigan businesses, protect Michigan’s natural resources from the effects of harmful emissions, and break the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.

REP held the press conference at The Rapid Central Station, which is the nation’s first LEED-certified public transit facility.
"From the green roof above our heads to the recycled materials in the floor beneath our feet, this building is an excellent example of how green development creates jobs and contributes to the economy," Sisson said. "Grand Rapids is ahead of the game when it comes to sustainability. It’s only fitting for the congressman who represents a city that is a model of sustainability to support the federal legislation that will clear the path for other cities to follow suit."

Sisson encouraged Ehlers’ constituents to reach out to their congressman: "Congressman Ehlers has a record of putting science and the economy over ideology, and we urge him to do the same now. I call on those of you here today to contact Congressman Ehlers and urge him to do the right thing tomorrow – urge him to vote yes on this plan to build a stronger Michigan."
