State Profile
Utah's
economic and population growth are largely due to its rugged beauty,
diverse environment, and valuable natural resources. Utah Republicans
for Environmental Protection accepts the stewardship responsibilities
given us all, by
our creator, over our natural heritage.
Former
Senator Robert Bennett and current Senator Orrin Hatch supported
successful
legislation that designated 256,000 acres in Washington County as
wilderness . Senator Hatch
sponsored the CLEAR Act (now in effect) to provide incentives for
alternative fuel vehicles, and is supporting the advance
of plug-in hybrid technology. These actions, along with success
in the designation of the Cedar Breaks Wilderness and prevention of
temporary storage of the nation's spent nuclear fuel near Salt Lake
City, are evidence that our congressional delegation is aware of the
need to protect our environment. Still, we need Utah's elected
officials to be more proactive in helping save the natural wonders
that make our state special.
Some
of the challenges we are currently facing are the Washington County
Growth Plan, government-subsidized suburban sprawl, large water
projects, and increased usage demand on our public lands and natural
resources.
Working together, we can conserve Utah's magnificent natural heritage for the pleasure and benefit of future generations.
