Holds 2009 Annual Meeting in Vancouver
The Washington Chapter's annual meeting,
held September 19, 2009, in Vancouver, featured a presentation on the
cleanup project at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in south central
Washington.
Guest speaker Steve Pfaff, the Department of Energy's tank farm project
director, talked about the history of plutonium production at Hanford,
disposal of plutonium processing wastes into underground tanks, and
efforts to remove the radioactive and hazardous wastes and "vitrify"
them into glass logs for permanent disposal at a geologic repository or
other long-term disposal site.
Also at the meeting, the chapter's Lloyd Flem reported on his recent
trip to Washington, DC, to lobby for the Pacific Northwest to receive a
share of federal funds for developing high-speed rail transportation.
On the trip, Lloyd accompanied former Washington Secretary of State
(and REP member) Ralph Munro and Bruce Agnew from the Cascadia Center
for Regional Development.
Policy Director Jim DiPeso reported on national issues, including
passage of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act, prospects for
climate legislation, and the 2010 midterm congressional elections.
